A Feel-Good Story from South Jersey: Youth Leadership Program Sparks Transformation
Torch Leadership Academy 2025: Students Leave Inspired, Equipped—and Transformed
Galloway, NJ — July 27, 2025
After four days of intensive leadership development, 120 students from 60 New Jersey schools left Stockton University not only more connected and confident, but also more prepared to make a real impact in their communities after attending Torch Leadership Academy (TORCH).
According to post-program surveys, students saw measurable growth in every leadership skill. Familiarity with core characteristics such as aspiration, resilience, and presence increased by as much as 35%. Proficiency in key skills, such as self-confidence and understanding one’s leadership style, increased by 25–42%.
The data tells only part of the story.
“Before coming to TORCH, I didn’t really see myself as a leader. Now I feel like I have the tools (and the responsibility) to lead with purpose,” said a junior from Essex County.
“TORCH helped me believe in my voice,” shared a first-generation student from South Jersey. “I used to think being a leader meant being loud. Now I know it means being honest, being empathetic, and showing up for others.”
When asked to name the top traits of a leader, the word students chose most often, both before and after, was “empathy.” However, in the final survey, new themes, such as “visionary,” “authentic,” “inclusive,” and “ethical,” emerged with greater clarity.
“It’s hard to put into words how much this program has changed the way I see myself and the world,” one student wrote. “I cried during the ceremonies because I felt seen for the first time.”
Participants also earned a certificate affirming 48 hours of service-learning credit, highlighting their work with nonprofits, change makers, and coaches throughout the week.
Bryan O’Donnell, President of Torch Leadership Academy, summed it up:
“We don’t just teach leadership. We build a community where young people learn to lead with their hearts, their minds, and their values. These skills are more important now than ever before. This experience will change the trajectory of these students’ lives and hopefully our society for the better.”
